EVENTS: MARCH 2ND TO MARCH 5TH 2010



What: Brown Bag Speaker Presentation on Uganda Water System, admission by donation
When: Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010, Noon – 1PM
Where: Okanagan Library – Downtown Kelowna branch
Why: The Urban Systems Foundation has been working with Africa Community Technical Service (ACTS) in Uganda for over 5 years to construct Gravity Flow Drinking Water Systems and help provide education to impoverished families in two remote valleys in South Western Uganda. The objective of this talk is to share the experience of working in Uganda, explain what some the current needs and challenges are and inspire listeners to help fulfill them. Photos and video footage showing the work that is being completed in Uganda will be integrated into the presentation. A question and answer period will follow the presentation.

What: Edible Car Competition – Design/Build/Eat
When: Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010, 3PM-6PM
Where: UBC-Okanagan Campus, Fipke Centre Atrium
Why: Where else can you take part in an event where first place is awarded to the team that goes the furthest and is the fastest to consume the car that they created from the provided vittles? Experience the thrill of the Winter Games without the rain, cold or traffic. Registration is free, preregistration is preferred, but we won’t turn you away at the door. J

What: Dinner presentation on “Engineering in the Okanagan: Encouraging Innovation and Business Development”
When: Thursday, March 4th, 2010,6PM – 9PM
Where: Manteo Resort
Why: The signature event of the week. This is a dinner event with time for networking before and after the presentation. The keynote presentation delivered by ESS Technology’s Martin Mallinson is and it should be excellent.
Who: Martin Mallinson is the Director of Design Engineering at ESS Technology in Kelowna. His background is electronic engineering in North America and Europe. Martin designed everything from the engine controller on the Airbus A340 and Boeing 777, to hospital X-ray machines, computer power supplies and DVD players. Initially educated in Physics at New College Oxford, Martin has always had a passion for electronics and has made his career in innovative electronic design. He has 45 patents in the USA and many more worldwide. He founded electronic engineering companies in the USA and Canada and now makes his home in the beautiful Kelowna area. He is pleased to do anything he can to promote science and
engineering in the valley

What: Okanagan College Spaghetti Bridge Competition
When: Friday, March 5th, 2010, 9am – 3pm
Where: Okanagan University College, Kelowna KLO Campus
Why: Once again, Okanagan College is putting on their internationally recognized competition where individuals and teams compete to create a bridge made of pasta and hot melt glue that can hold the greatest weight, and once again APEGBC Okanagan branch will be there. Come on down and cheer for the home team, or cheer for the underdog – your choice.
